Juliet Schwalbach
Juliet became involved in ceramics at the University of Illinois in the early 80’s earning a BFA. After a stint at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she relocated and walked away from clay for 20 years. During that time Juliet’s passion for textiles re emerged and the focus was on complex weaves and natural dyeing. Winning a free class at a raffle with Pottery NW lured Juliet back in the studio where for over a decade, she supported the organization by taking classes, joining the Board and fundraising. The pandemic showed her that creating solo wasn’t so bad. An offer for a studio in Fremont came up and its been pedal to the metal for the last year and a half.
Juliet’s pieces are handbuilt with Porcelain paper clay using all means of color and texture to delight the viewer. Her moth collection are intimate wall pieces with a pattern on top of pattern effect, and studies in color layering. Each of these pieces reflect the feeling of frenetic as the world came back like the moth escaping the cocoon.
Mandi Salov was the first person I thought of to help me get started in my first ever solo studio . She’s been instrumental in guiding me on everything. From getting organized, to assisting me with building techniques and technical glaze questions. Mentoring is so critical to move to the next level and I’m thrilled to have this connection.
